PAULA

Paula Marcondes contemporary artist investigates what it means to be human and conscious in a contemporary phygital world.

BIOGRAPHY

Paula Marcondes was born in 1969 in São Paulo, Brazil, where she attended a German school and later studied law at the University of São Paulo.

She grew up in a household where the distance between people was felt before it was understood. That distance became the first question: what breaks connection between human beings, and what restores it? It is a question she has never stopped asking.

The answer took her first into people and organisations. For thirty years, through ACT Human & Business Development, which she founded in 1997, she researched and taught consciousness, communication, and resilience to Fortune 500 companies and government organisations across Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, and beyond. She lived and worked in Asia for nearly three decades, raised a family, and spent extended periods in Japan for over a decade. She studied painting at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, explored acrylic painting under the guidance of artist Patricia Cabaleiro from 2005 to 2020, and honed her skills in digital photography with photographer Tom White at Objectifs Singapore in 2018.

The art that followed is the same inquiry carried into a different language: material, light, image, and space. The experiences that shaped her earliest understanding of the world became a mirror: not a wound to recover from, but a surface to reflect on, a place from which to listen, and a source of questions that have sustained a life’s research into consciousness, connection, and what it means to be human and to be connected with oneself, other human beings, and the universe in which we exist.

Her practice spans installation, object, painting, performance, photography, and video. The medium is never chosen in advance. It follows the research.

Currently Paula divides her time between São Paulo, Bozeman (Montana, USA), the United Kingdom, and Singapore. She is part of the artist development programmes offered by Galeria Tato in São Paulo, including Clínica para Artistas, Casa Tato 12, and Casa Tato Europa, and is part of the artist group N.OVO.
