NOTE The work on this website is organised in two ways. By Series, the work follows the research: each series is a body of inquiry, growing from the one before it, asking the same question in a different form. That is the primary way to navigate this practice. By Mediums offers a second entry point, for those who want to explore the work through the materials and forms it takes: object, installation, painting, performance, photography, video. A single series can move across multiple mediums. A medium can carry multiple series. The two ways of looking are not contradictory. They are complementary. The medium follows the research. Always.
I started with painting and photography.
As the paintings developed, I noticed what was happening on the surface: layers of acrylic building up, layers of collage, layers of stamping. The works became heavy. Michael and some of the other Portraits paintings weigh several kilograms. The surface was no longer flat. It was topographic.
Naturally, paintings became objects. Objects became assemblages. Assemblages became sculptures. Sculptures became installations. The medium was not a decision. It was a consequence of listening to what the work needed.
Performance preceded all of this. For thirty years I stood in front of audiences: teaching, training, facilitating, coaching. I performed before I painted. I am, in essence, a performer and a storyteller. That is what I have always been. The visual work is a continuation of the same practice in a different language: presence, attention, the body in relation to others, the story that connects.
The mediums listed here are not categories. They are stages of a single continuous journey.
