PAULA

Paula Marcondes contemporary artist investigates what it means to be human and conscious in a contemporary phygital world.

BIOGRAPHY

Paula Marcondes (b. 1969, São Paulo) is a Singapore/Montana/São Paulo-based Brazilian visual artist and researcher working across installation, painting, photography, video, and performance. Her practice started in 1995 and was professionalised a decade ago.

Her central subject is disconnection, rooted in a deeper lack of consciousness. The digital colonialism of the phygital age is a symptom of that disconnection, not its cause. "I want to experience what it means to be conscious" is the question her work keeps returning to. She builds objects and assemblages from polycarbonate, plexiglass, resin, light, and repurposed material she collects or scavenges, which stand alone or enter installations and interventions. She makes three-dimensional paintings and handheld video performances that hold a single frame for ninety seconds, then are marked with digital drawing that brings the human hand and its inevitable imperfection forward.

She has exhibited in Brazil, Argentina, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Her work is held in the permanent collection of Galeria Tato, São Paulo, and in private collections in New York and the United Kingdom.
